  • Theatre Fatzer

    CHITEN Presents (Japan)

    Synopsis

The First World War made mass carnage possible with the invention of the tank and the machine gun. Fatzer is one of a group of soldiers who desert from their trench and are hiding out in a basement. There they wait for a revolution that will end the war. But as they wait, their solidarity disintegrates and dies. Brecht's play is a tale of despair but nonetheless has his trademark humor.
Chiten presented the premiere in Japan of this unfinished work by Brecht. The original "fragment" is a long 500 pages of verse and notes, and Chiten's staging utilized the version edited by Heiner Müller, Downfall of the Egoist Johann Fatzer, as well as elements unused in the Müller text. The "rock" production was created with the band Kukangendai, featuring cacophonous electronic music with resonating gunshots and dying screams that intermix with the actors' voices to weave a dynamic yet tense atmosphere. Since its premiere in 2013 it has been widely recognized as one of Chiten's most innovative works and found a popular following among younger audiences.

  • Drama Titus Andronicus 2.0

Tang Shu-wing Theatre Studio Presents (Hong Kong SAR, China)

Acclaimed as one of the most significant events of Hong Kong contemporary theatre, Director Tang Shu-wing takes an audacious and ground-breaking approach in presenting the revenge classic of the Roman General Titus by story-telling in physical theatre!

    Synopsis

The play was taken on tour to six cities in Europe and Asia after its premiere in Hong Kong in 2009.
Titus Andronicus 2.0 is a work of physical theatre in storytelling form with an audacious and ground-breaking theatre directing approach. It focuses on the core of theatre where minimalism takes over: the removables are removed on an empty stage floor lit measurably on seven chairs and actors, commuting between the capacities of the characters and narrators. The play is an adventurous exploration of all kinds of possibilities in theatre, leading the audience to embark on a journey of soul-searching, awakening and mind purification.
Titus Andronicus is the first of Shakespeare's tragedies and is still a controversial work to these days because of its gory content. The story is about the Roman general Titus Andronicus, who has defeated the Goths. The new Roman emperor wants to marry Titus' daughter, Lavinia, but is met with objection, so he marries Tamora, Queen of the defeated Goths, instead. To avenge the defeat, Tamora and her slave Aaron the Moor let Tamora's sons rape Lavinia. Titus then feigns madness and plots his revenge.
Titus 2.0 represents an adventurous expedition to all possibilities of a theatre, where all audience members are presented with an entry to the vicinity filled with primal forces and lush imaginations, embarking a voyage of self-reflection, awakening and internal cleansing. Tang's audacious and ground-breaking approach after combining intensively collaborative training and multiple narrations from improvised experimentation, the resulting energy is radiantly gigantic.

  • Drama The Flood

    Finucane& Smith Presents (Australia)

Patrick White Award Winning Playwright Jackie Smith
Australia's most awarded actresses including Berlin Film Festival winner
directed by 'national treasure' Moira Finucane
    Australian Gothic Theatre

    Synopsis

With a reputation across 5 continents for theatre that is provocative, moving, genre-defying and unique, Finucane& Smith Unlimited bring to the Shanghai International Theatre Festival its first original Australian drama, the haunting Australian Gothic The Flood.
The Flood is brought to life by 3 of Australia's most acclaimed actresses who are hot property wherever they go; from 5 best actress awards between them to Maude Davey's Berlin Film Festival best actress to Shirley Cattunar's 55 years in demand; to Caroline Lee's starring in Cate Blanchett's directorial debut at STC A Kind of Alaska, these are the kinds of actresses people are talking about when they say "you HAD to be there".
The Flood is an Australian Gothic. The set is a vast moonlit landscape, the black shadows of eucalypt trees against a darkening sky, seen through a veil of flywire. It is surreal and only too real; domestic and epic. Inside, a life of clutter, of memories pasted over, of claustrophobic chaos threatens to drown us. The gothic is often seen as a particularly European quality, but its hallmarks - the romantic, the uncanny and the sense of looming threat - are threaded through many tales, both contemporary and historic written about the Australian bush. When the river rises we spend the night with these three women and see the interface between the monstrous and the mundane.
